This work is part of a project aiming to define a methodology for building simple but robust stemmers, without having knowledge of the stemmer's target language. The methodology starts with a very simple primary stemmer that is applied in some collection of words and returns the corresponding stems. The primary stemmer removes always the longest suffix that match the ending of the examined word. Next, Information Retrieval (IR) experts express their arguments against the results of the primary stemmer. This methodology allows the creation of a number of consecutive trial stemmers that gradually conform increasingly to the arguments expressed by the IR experts. Here, we are giving attention to the attributes and the adjusted characteristics/options that are available to the responsible person for building the consecutive trial stemmers and finally creating the best trial (the stemmer that respects as much as possible the arguments against the primary stemmer).

Finding the correct category (class) a new unclassified document belongs to is an interesting and difficult problem, with a wide range of applications. Our methodology for narrative text classification is based on two techniques: we calculate the distance (similarity) between the new unclassified document and all the pre-classified documents of each class and also calculate the similarity of the new document to the ‘average class document’ of each class. In both cases we use key phrases (text phrases or key terms) as the distinctive features of our text classification methodology and eventually the proposed text classification method is based on the automatic extraction of an authority list of key phrases that is appropriate for discriminating between different classes. In this paper, we apply this methodology in handling Greek text and we present the key concepts, the algorithms, and some critical decisions. A number of parameters of the mining algorithm are also fine tuned. The actual text classification system, the adopted (embedded) ideas and the alternative values of parameters are evaluated using two training sets (test collections).

AbstractAutomated monitoring of a whole production plant, equipped with a variety of different machines is a challenging task. Particular industries are introducing their own XML based schemas to ease the integration process. Print industry attempts to accomplish this with Job Description Format (JDF). However, a number of older print industry machines is rarely ready for such an integration. For integrating a real production plant, here is proposed a novel approach in utilizing a concept from Internet of Things (IoT) called edge computing, to enhance and integrate various printing and finishing equipment status in a unified manner. Edge computing assumes that a lot of processing is on a remote node and that the data is eventually aggregated to another location. For edge nodes small board computers (SBC) with wireless connectivity were used to collect data from machine sensors and store it locally. The data collected on the edge indicates status and operational speed over time of a machine and could be used for various analysis later. Edge node stores all data to a local database that could be accessed remotely or the node could be converted to a JDF compliant producer. The data from edges is then collected to establish a plant wide monitoring system that is a part of management information system. The concept presented here was successfully implemented in a real production environment.
