Low cost, cross-language and cross-platform Information Retrieval and Documentation tools

Abstract: In this paper we focus on the design and implementation of low cost, cross language and cross platform information retrieval and documentation tools suitable for the collection, organization and administration of unstructured and semi-structured information imported from various sources. A modular Computer-Assisted Information Resources Navigation (CAIRN) software architecture is proposed and the requirements of each module are presented. A discussion about the implementation is based on the experiments made w… Show more

“…The Porter's stemmer (Porter, 1980) is more granular and it uses file levels. Except the abovepublished stemmers, there is another elder Greek stemmer (nnk's stemmer), incorporated to some commercial (Moumouris, 1995) and some research (Karanikolas, 2007;Karanikolas and Skourlas, 2010) applications. This stemmer uses a large number of suffixes and it elaborates the suffix removal (or replacement) in six iterations (levels).…”

“…The variation of the inflected forms of nouns and verbs makes the need for a lemmatization lexicon, or for some stemming algorithm that replaces words by stems, obvious. A stemming algorithm has been implemented and has been tested for many years [3,[37][38][39]. It follows a similar approach to Porter's algorithm [20] (stepwise replacement of suffixes) and is based on rules extracted from a classic Greek grammar textbook [40].…”

“…An extensive catalog of such a schema could be found on http://www.oasis-open.org. These XML based systems have corresponding workflows with standardized data exchange mechanisms like XML-RPC (remote procedure call), SOAP or REST (Karanikolas, 2007), that ease a system integration somehow. In this manner, modern printing and finishing equipment has a number of advanced information integration capabilities, usually in a form of a so called Job Description Format (JDF) from CIP4 organization (http://cip4.org) that is used for, but unfortunately real-world print plants are rarely fully equipped with all machines implementing the standard, and even when this is the case the integration is rarely that easy as advertised.…”
