Low-Cost Assessment of User eXperience Through EEG Signals

Abstract: EEG signals are an important tool for monitoring the brain activity of a person, but equipment, expertise and infrastructure are required. EEG technologies are generally expensive, thus few people are normally able to use them. However, some low-cost technologies are now available. One of these is OPENBCI, but it seems that it is yet to be widely employed in Human-Computer Interaction. In this study, we used OPENBCI technology to capture EEG signals linked to brain activity in ten subjects as they interacted w… Show more

“…This study contributes to the body of research in the multi-disciplinary field of intelligent methods development in HCI and HCII, CS, and AI fields. Our work presents a systematic mapping study of 454 papers, retrieved from several digital libraries and application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, in order to fulfill the objectives of the study: (1) what have been the trends and demographics of the literature within the field of HCII, (2) what has been the research space of the literature within the field of HCII, and (3) what sensors technology and intelligent methods have been used in the development and evaluation of solutions for HCII.…”

“…In Krigolson's [3] research, computer and portable EEG systems can easily conduct ERP research. Cano et al [4] studied human-computer interaction in gaming activities based on low-cost EEG signal technology, greatly expanding the possible use of ERP methods in various new environments. Furthermore, the cost of electroencephalography is much lower than other brain imaging techniques, and is one of the most readable and promising neuroscience tools in user research [5].…”
