Objective: To find a new natural source of antioxidant, the phenolic contents and antioxidant activities of some secondary metabolites extracted from roots of Ziziphus lotus were evaluated. Methods: The total polyphenol contents were determined spectrophotometrically. Pyrrocatechol, catechin and cyanidin equivalents were used for these parameters. The antioxidant activities of the extracts were determined by several in vitro systems of assays, namely DPPH radical scavenging activity method, b-Carotene Bleaching assay (BCB), Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power assay (FRAP) and Total Antioxidant capacity test (TAC). Results: The quantitative estimation showed that the roots of Z. lotus were rich in polyphenols (20.09 mg PE/g DW) and proanthocyannidins (1.56%) and they contained a small amount of flavonoids (0.02 mg CE/g DW). The most fractions exhibited high antioxidant activities, and some even showed higher potency than the standard synthetic antioxidants in some instances. In DPPH assay, all extracts had shown significant inhibition (58.535 -94.730% at 1 mg/mL). In addition, the IC 50 values ranged from 0.211 to 0.816 mg/mL, compared to 0.110, 0.214, 0.214 and 0.413 mg/mL for gallic acid, tannic acid, butylated-hydroxyanisol and ascorbic acid respectively. In (BCB) assay, the extracts showed strong inhibition (55.55 -100.00% at 1 mg/mL) and the IC 50 values ranging from 0.123 to 0.850 mg/mL compared to 0.433 mg/mL for gallic acid. A dose dependant curve was obtained for all extracts in the FRAP assay. However, the antioxidant potencies of ascorbic acid and extracts were comparable at low concentrations. The majority of extracts showed the highest value of antioxidant activity, based on TAC test (0.073 -0.398 mg ascorbic acid / mg extract). Conclusion: The results indicate that Z. lotus roots could be an important sources of natural antioxidants.

Fa y acid synthase (FAS) a racts more and more attention recently as a potential target for metabolic syndrome, such as cancer, obesity, diabetes and cerebrovascular disease. FAS inhibitors are widely existed in plants, consisting of diversiform compounds. These inhibitors exist not only in herbs also in many plant foods, such as teas, allium vegetables and some fruits. These effective components include gallated catechins, theaflavins, flavonoids, condensed and hydrolysable tannins, thioethers, pentacyclic triterpenes, stilbene derivatives, etc, and they target at the different domains of FAS, showing different inhibitory mechanisms. Interestingly, these FAS inhibitor-contained herbs and plant foods and their effective components are commonly related to the prevention of metabolic syndromes including fatreducing and depression of cancer. From biochemical angle, FAS can control the balance between energy provision and fat production. Some studies have shown that the effects of those effective components in plants on metabolic syndromes are mediated by inhibiting FAS. This suggests that FAS plays a critical role in the regulation of energy metabolism, and the FAS inhibitors from plants have signifi cant potential application value in the treatment and prevention of metabolic syndromes.KEY WORDS: fatty acid synthase, metabolic syndrome cancer metabolism, inhibitor.

Seven parts of Pistacia atlantica were collected from Tlemcen in Algeria (fruits, leaves, buds, stems, roots internal and external trunk barks). Tannin content was determined and antioxidant activity of tannic extracts were measured using different assays: Total antioxidant capacity, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), reducing power (FRAP) and β-carotene bleaching assay The results showed that the highest tannin contents were observed in roots(49.789±0.391 mg CE/g DM) and internal trunk barks (49.095±0.306 mg CE/g DM).Tannins extracted from leaves, roots and external trunk barks showed very good DPPH radical scavenging activity (IC50 of 0.124±0.001, 0.304±0.001 and 0.440±0.001 mg/mL), ferric reducing power (0.021±0.001, 0.154±0.001 and 0.170±0.005 mg/mL) and β-carotene bleaching inhibition (0.313±0.009, 0.094±0.006 and 0.131±0.002 mg/mL), respectively. Therefore, the results suggest that this plant with all its studied parts might be considered as a potential candidate of possible health-promoting functional foods.
