Abstract: Low-back pain in commercial tra velers. Scand J Work Environ Health 1992;18:52-8. The role of occupation al environment in the occurrence of low-back pain was analyzed for 1719 commercial tra velers (1376 men and 343 women). At the beginning of the study (To)the group was interviewed to determine current lifestyle and occupat ional factors associated with low-back pain during the previous 12 months. “…However, the studies did not differentiate between nonspecific and radiating low back pain or the duration or severity of the symptoms. Among working populations, the 1-year incidence of low back pain for Ն1 day has ranged between 13% and 35% in men (7)(8)(9) and between 17% and 38% in women (8 -10). However, women reported incident chronic back pain more frequently than men (11,12).…”

“…Previous studies have reported inconsistent results regarding the role of age (7,8,10,13,15) and sex (8,9,13) in low back pain. There is some evidence suggesting that nonspecific and radiating low back pain have different risk factors (16,17).…”

“…In general, the figure shows a higher annual prevalence rate for those occupational groups that spend more than half their working day in a sitting position. Commercial travelers [62] and office workers (in control groups) [7,14] showed a lower prevalence rate (25%) than the average of annual prevalence rate (38%) found in the compared European general population [61,77]. Tractor drivers reported the highest annual prevalence rate, with almost two times the annual prevalence rate (72%) of the general population [14].…”

“…Two studies [43,62] evaluated the effect of extended daily periods of driving (>4 h/day and >5 h/day). Each study found OR > 1 (0.5-2.7) and OR=3.7 (0.9-14), respectively; however, the P value was not significant in any of the studies (P>0.05).…”
