This book investigates rabbinic treatises relating to animals, humans, and other life-forms. Through an original analysis of creaturely generation and species classification by late ancient Palestinian rabbis and other thinkers in the Roman Empire, Rafael Rachel Neis shows how rabbis blurred the lines between humans and other beings, even as they were intent on classifying creatures and tracing the contours of what it means to be human. Recognizing that life proliferates by mechanisms beyond sexual copulation between two heterosexual “male” and “female” individuals of the same species, the rabbis proposed intricate alternatives. In parsing a variety of creatures, they considered overlaps and resemblances across seemingly distinct species, upsetting in turn unmitigated claims of human distinctiveness. When a Human Gives Birth to a Raven enters conversations in animal studies, queer theory, trans theory, and feminist science studies to provincialize sacrosanct ideals of reproduction in favor of a broader range that spans generation, kinship, and species. The book thereby offers powerful historical alternatives to the paradigms associated with so-called traditional ideas.

In der Hebräischen Bibel gibt es kein Verbot weiblicher Homoerotik. Auch in der Mischna und der Tosefta finden sich keine gesetzlichen Aussagen dazu. Spätere jüdisch-rechtliche Positionen zu weiblicher Homoerotik lassen sich in drei Punkten zusammenfassen, nämlich (1) „Sifra Achare Mot zu Lev 18,3 (keine Heirat weiblicher wie männlicher homoerotischer Paare)“; (2) „Talmudische Aussagen zu weiblicher Homoerotik im palästinischen Talmud Gittin 8,10,49c (Kontroverse, ob weibliche Homoerotik ein sexuelles Vergehen darstellt oder nicht) und in den babylonischen Talmudtraktaten Yevamot 76a (weibliche Homoerotik ist bloße Obszönität) und Schabbat 65a–b (Bedenken gegenüber Schwestern, die miteinander schlafen)“; und (3) „Maimonides: unterschied-liche Anschauungen über weibliche Homoerotik in seinen Werken Mischne Tora, Sefer Keduscha, Hilchot Issure Bia 21,8 und Kommentar zur Mischna Sanhedrin 7,4“. Diese halachischen Texte werden queer gelesen, um jüdische lesbische Frauen und andere heutige queere Personen zu stärken.

Autor analizuje podstawy Pawłowej argumentacji na temat homoseksualizmu w Rz 1,26-27. Po pierwsze są nimi obowiązujące w świecie hellenistycznym kategorie honoru i wstydu, do których apostoł odwołuje się, opisując żeńskie i męskie relacje homoseksualne jako powodowane „haniebnymi namiętnościami” i rozpalonymi „żądzami”, a w konsekwencji prowadzące do „bezwstydu” (Rz 1,26-27). Po drugie Paweł opiera się na prawie naturalnym, które pojmuje nie jako normę kulturową ale, podobnie jak niektórzy autorzy grecko-rzymscy i żydowscy, jako porządek stworzenia przeniknięty Bożym zamysłem. Po trzecie wreszcie, podstawowym punktem odniesienia dla apostoła pozostają Pisma oraz szeroko pojęta tradycja żydowska (Kpł 18,22; 20,13; Pwt 4,16-19; Ps 105,20; Jr 2,11; Mdr 12 – 15), a zwłaszcza Rdz 1 – 3 (ze szczególnym naciskiem na Rdz 1,27-28). Wiążą one homoseksualizm z idolatrią, przekraczaniem porządku stworzenia i zacieraniem różnic płciowych między mężczyzną i kobietą. Służą one prokreacji, ale także wzajemnemu zrozumieniu się i uzupełnianiu mężczyzny i kobiety. Zarówno w kwestii honoru i wstydu, rozumienia natury jak i powiązania płciowości z prokreacją apostoł może liczyć na sprzymierzeńców dla swojej myśli w postaci autorów grecko-rzymskich i żydowskich takich jak Platon, Plutarch, Dio Chryzostom, Filon, Józef Flawiusz, Pseudo-Focylides i inni.
