Losses of adult sheep due to ovine Johne's disease in 12 infected flocks over a 3‐year period

Abstract: This study demonstrates the significant biological and financial impact of OJD on sheep flocks. These findings are of relevance to all Australian sheep flocks infected or at risk of OJD infection.

“…By December 2005, 1840 flocks were reported infected, mostly in the state of New South Wales (NSW) (Kennedy and Sergeant, 2005). In the southern tablelands of NSW, OJD mortality ranged from 2.1% to 17.5% on 12 infected farms in 2002, resulting in a decrease in farm gross margin ranging from 2.2% to 15.4% (Bush et al, 2006). Mortalities and the subsequent economic losses vary considerably among infected sheep farms, even between flocks with apparently similar characteristics.…”

“…paratuberculosis (MAP), results in substantial economic losses due to reduced production, increased mortalities and the costs associated with the disease control programmes (Bush et al, 2006). The infection usually enters a flock by introduction of infected sheep and then spreads within the flock mainly by the faecal-oral route.…”

“…Losses to the American dairy industry alone were estimated to be US$ 200 to 250 million annually (Ott et al, 1999). Similarly in Australia, paratuberculosis caused an average reduction of income of AU$ 13,715 per farm per year on 12 infected Merino sheep flocks (Bush et al, 2006). Control programmes initiated in many countries to combat the disease have met with limited success, partly due to incomplete understanding of disease epidemiology, particularly the factors that affect disease prevalence and mycobacterial survival.…”
