Loss estimation for fusion splices of single-mode fibers

Abstract: A new method based on the fiber microdeformation theory and image processing techniques has been developed to estimate splice losses of single-mode fibers for fusion splicers. The method is to be found more accurate than the conventional butt-joint approximation, especially when the core deformation is relatively large near the splice point. More than 2000 splice tests have been made. Correlations between the estimations and the measurements under different conditions are illustrated.

“…In this paper, we will draw a conclusion that the mode instability threshold can be increased because of the improvement of offset fiber fusion. The above research efforts [22][23][24][25][26][27][28] are mostly focused on the variation of beam quality caused by fusion deviation; few focus on the fusion loss of the fiber fusion point. However, for a fiber laser system, especially a highpower fiber laser sys tem, the power loss must be considered.…”

“…In an allfiber laser, the fusion deviation will also increase the power loss, which will decrease the laser efficiency and increase the risk of damaging the fiber laser system. In the past, fiber fusion splice has been studied a lot in theory and experiment [22][23][24][25][26][27][28]. However, all of these theories consider that the injected mode is only a fundamental mode; the multi mode states are not considered.…”
