Understanding the causes of maize landrace loss in farmers' field is essential to design effective conservation strategies. These strategies are necessary to ensure that genetic resources are available in the future. Previous studies have shown that this loss is caused by multiple factors. In this longitudinal study, we used a collection of 93 maize landrace accessions from Morelos, Mexico, and stored at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) Maize Germplasm Bank, to trace back to the original 66 donor families after 50 years and explore the causes for why they abandoned or conserved their seed lots. We used an actor-centered approach, based on interviews and focus group discussions. We adopt a Multi-Level Perspective framework to examine loss as a process, accommodating multiple causes and the interactions among them. We found that the importance of maize landrace cultivation had diminished over the last 50 years in the study area. By 2017, 13 families had conserved a total of 14 seed lots directly descended from the 1967 collection. Focus group participants identified 60 accessions that could still be found in the surrounding municipalities. Our findings showed that multiple interconnected changes in maize cultivation technologies, as well as in maize markets, other crop markets, agricultural and land policies, cultural preferences, urbanization and climate change, have created an unfavorable environment for the conservation of maize landraces. Many of these processes were location-and landrace-specific, and often led to landrace abandonment during the shift from one farmer generation to the next.

Background. Non-timber forest products are being integrated into conservation strategies. Their relevance for obtaining medicinal plants is frequently cited as a reason to conserve forests. Question. Can the use of medicinal plants motivate forest conservation? Study site and dates. The study was conducted in Santiago Camotlán, Distrito Villa Alta, Oaxaca, a humid mountainous area in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, Mexico, from August 2011 to May 2013. Methods. Ecological Land Units were characterized, and the relative importance of medicinal plants was evaluated. The ethnobotanical methods included participatory mapping, open interviews, semi-structured interviews and free lists with local healers, as well as members of 17 systematically selected households. Medicinal plant species, and plants considered characteristic for an Ecological Land Unit by local specialists, were collected during plant walks with both healers and experts on the territory. For each species, a newly proposed Knowledge, Use and Perception Index based frequency of mention in free lists, frequency of use and perceived importance was calculated. Results. Local people divided their territory primarily by physical geographic characteristics and utilization. Nine units were distinguished: village and roads, home gardens, pastures, cultivated fields (maize, beans, sugar cane and coffee), cloud forest, semi-evergreen tropical forest and evergreen tropical forest, secondary vegetation ("acahuales"), and riparian vegetation. The most important medicinal plants were Salvia microphylla, Lippia alba and Artemisia absinthium, all cultivated in home gardens; weedy vegetation provided the majority of all medicinal plants. Individuals interested in preserving medicinal species transplanted them into a home garden. Conclusion. For people in the study area, the presence and use of medicinal plants was not a decisive reason for forest conservation. La percepción de estudiantes de las carreras profesionales del estado de Nuevo León con mayor población estudiantil de las ocho áreas del conocimiento consideradas por la Asociación Nacional de Universidades e Instituciones de Educación Superior (ANUIES) fue evaluada sobre la belleza del paisaje del Monumento Natural Cerro de la Silla (MNCS), símbolo representativo del Área Metropolitana de Monterrey (AMM). Se diseñó un muestreo no probabilístico por cuota máxima de 25 estudiantes por carrera, quienes hubieran cursado materias sobre aspectos ambientales. Se aplicaron en total 386 encuestas, tanto en universidades del sector público (196) como del sector privado (190). Las calificaciones más altas fueron otorgadas por alumnos procedentes de las escuelas privadas; se estableció una asociación entre la valoración otorgada al paisaje del MNCS y la carrera profesional de los encuestados. No obstante que la población considerada había cursado materias sobre aspectos ambientales, solo 17 % de ambos sectores educativos manifestó tener conocimiento acerca del problema ambiental del MNCS. Es necesario fortalecer con ejemplos regionales el contenido de las materias sobre aspectos ambientales que se imparten a los estudiantes de las universidades públicas y privadas de Nuevo León., con especial atención al valor del paisaje natural de áreas protegidas como indicador de su calidad ambiental y su consecuente contribución a mejorar la calidad de vida de la sociedad.
