Loose regulation of medical marijuana programs associated with higher rates of adult marijuana use but not cannabis use disorder

Abstract: Background and Aims Most US states have passed medical marijuana laws (MMLs), with great variation in program regulation impacting enrollment rates. We aimed to compare changes in rates of marijuana use, heavy use and cannabis use disorder across age groups while accounting for whether states enacted medicalized (highly regulated) or non-medical mml programs. Design Difference-in-differences estimates with time-varying state-level MML coded by program type (medicalized versus non-medical). Multi-level linear… Show more

“…This increasing prevalence has raised concerns about potential negative consequences associated with problematic CU, specifically cannabis use disorder (abuse or dependence). While little work has identified a direct link between increasing prevalence of CU and an increase in cannabis use disorders (CUD), researchers have identified it as a potential concern (C. Mauro et al, 2017;Williams, Santaella-Tenorio, Mauro, Levin, & Martins, 2017)and noted a recent increase in the rate of CUD (Budney, Roffman, Stephens, & Walker, 2007;D. S. Hasin & Grant, 2016).…”

“…To date, adolescent marijuana use has remained unchanged after the enactment of medical marijuana laws according to cross-sectional studies [10][11][12][13][14], but prevalence of marijuana use might increase with the recent enactment of recreational marijuna laws.…”
