Longitudinal Stability of the Group Environment Questionnaire With Elite Female Athletes.

Abstract: The Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ) has been used extensively in previous research, yet factorial validity for this measure has been inconclusive, and the temporal stability of scores has not been previously investigated. As argued by D. E. Conroy, J. N. Metzler, and S. M. Hofer ( 2003), investigations into stability are invaluable in providing support for the structural and generalizability of scores over time. In this study, elite female netball players completed the GEQ at 4 different times across the… Show more

“…Longitudinal studies are needed that would track athletes' perceptions across time (over a competitive season or even across years). As noted by others who have employed longitudinal study designs (e.g., Heuzé et al, 2006;Leeson & Fletcher, 2005), athletes' perceptions of their team's cohesion do change somewhat over a competitive season. In particular, the different dimensions (task versus social; individual versus group) appear to change in differential ways.…”

“…The GEQ was used primarily because the intervention was expected to improve team spirit or cohesion, and because it has been used widely in the literature (see Leeson & Fletcher, 2005). Focusing only on the outcome of cohesion may have misdirected our understanding of other changes in the players (e.g., sacrifice, emotional disclosure, and friendship; Carron, Brawley, & Widmeyer, 1998).…”

“…Os índices de ajuste do modelo foram semelhantes ao estudo de validação do GEQ para atletas no contexto espanhol 3,17,20 , assim como ao estudo de validação original do instrumento para o contexto brasileiro 15 . Outras pesquisas internacionais de validação do GEQ também verificaram a estrutura fatorial do modelo proposto por Carron et al 16 e também encontraram valores de suporte para o modelo de quatro fatores 33,34 .…”
