Longitudinal invariance and information of the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales

Abstract: Objectives The study investigates the psychometric properties of the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales (DASS‐21). Method The DASS‐21 was administered to a community sample twice over the course of 7 months ( N T 1 = 235 and N T 2 = 171; 51% female, Mage = 22 years). A partial credit Rasch model was used to determine the scales' longitudinal invariance and reliability. Results The DASS‐21 mostly demonstrated longitudinal invariance across administrations. The Depression and Anxiety subscales were sufficie… Show more

“…Only the subscale score for general anxiety (DASS-ANX) was used in the current study. The DASS-ANX has been shown to be a reliable and valid measure of anxiety symptoms (Anghel, 2020;Brown et al, 1997). In our sample, the DASS-ANX showed acceptable internal consistency (a ¼ .78; McDonald's x ¼ .79).…”

“…Finally, in about 2% of the cases, five communities were detected, with different combinations involved. Given previous factor studies on DASS-21 (Anghel, 2020;Crawford & Henry, 2003), this variability is expected. In particular, the strong association between item #1 and #12 has previously been interpreted in factor studies as covariance of errors (Crawford & Henry, 2003;Johnson et al, 2016) and this could have affected the spinglass algorithm in a minority of the cases.…”

“…The version used was a validated Spanish translation [ 38 ] with a total alpha coefficient of 0.96 and an equally high alpha coefficient for the depression (0.93), anxiety (0.86), and stress (0.91) subscales. Overall, the scales in the original English and the Spanish version have sound psychometric properties [ 39 , 40 ]. Our sample had a total Cronbach alpha index of 0.94, and the subscales had the following values: depression (0.85), anxiety (0.83), and stress (0.90).…”
