Bridges over Troubled Waters: Mapping the Interplay Between Anxiety, Depression and Stress Through Network Analysis of the DASS-21

Abstract: Background. Symptoms of depression and anxiety often co-occur in the same individuals. In order to increase our understanding of concurrent depression and anxiety, it may be necessary to define and model psychopathology as a network of symptoms, that actively reinforce (or inhibit) one another. The current study set out to investigate how depression, anxiety and stress symptoms cluster together, and which symptoms act as bridges between these clusters.Methods. Network analysis was used to investigate the sympt… Show more

“…While factors underlying depression include anxiety (Van den Bergh, Marchetti, & Koster, 2020 ), diminished social connection is more specifically salient for the onset and maintenance of depressive symptoms (Hames, Hagan, & Joiner, 2013 ; Rudolph, 2009 ). The social isolation that has resulted from quarantines, remote schooling, working from home, and other social distancing measures may have limited access to social supports that had historically protected against depressive symptoms (Erzen & Çikrikci, 2018 ; Ge, Yap, Ong, & Heng, 2017 ).…”

“…Multiple comparison correction (i.e., as multiple edges were compared between networks) was performed with Bonferroni, whereby statistical significance was defined by p < .05 (Burger et al, 2020). To get an impression about the relative importance of each node within the network, degree centrality values (k, sometimes also called node strength; Valente, 2012;van den Bergh et al, 2021) was calculated for each node. Degree centrality is defined as the sum of the absolute weights connecting a given node to all other nodes in a network.…”

“…The last decade has seen the growth of various network approaches that allow researchers to probe and exploit potential interactions of observable variables associated with a given construct, or between constructs themselves Borsboom et al, 2021;Golino & Epskamp, 2017;Marsman et al, 2018;Schmittmann et al, 2013;Van den Bergh et al, 2021). These approaches build networks where nodes represent measurable variables and links reflect relationships between them, with the purpose of focusing not on common underlying factors but on the structure of the inter-dependencies between the observables.…”

“…Such psychometric networks are capable of reflecting dynamical processes (Schmittmann et al, 2013), and can consider lagged relationships that can reveal dynamics leading to the emergence of symptoms . Crucially, these networks often reveal non-trivial features of the groups of variables they represent, which can be identified by leveraging tools of network science such as measures of centrality (Bringmann et al, 2019; or community detection (Van den Bergh et al, 2021). Furthermore, it has been argued that important outgoing effects or events can be identified from an examination of either the overall network or part of it -e.g.…”
