Longitudinal inhomogeneity of DC current transport properties in Gd-system HTS tapes – Statistical approach for system design

Abstract: In this paper, we studied the DC current transport properties of GdBCO-coated conductors, including the longitudinal distribution of critical current. Inhomogeneity of the local critical current was firstly measured by means of TapeStar™ at 77 K, and then characterized based on a statistical method. Current transport properties were also measured for different positions and/or distances of potential taps using a four-probe method. It was shown that the longitudinal inhomogeneity of the conductor was described … Show more

“…Fluctuations of the superconductor properties along the tape length can be represented as the variation of both the critical current and the power exponent along the tape length, and inserted in the computation of the U(I) dependence [60]. In some reports, these quantities correlate [29,61], and in some cases the fluctuation of n was found weaker [62] or negligible [63,64]. In order to keep the basic idea simple we neglect here the fluctuations of n and represent the changing tape properties by varying I c only.…”

“…With the help of statistical methods, one can implement the fluctuations of critical current into the design of a superconducting device, provided the conductor properties follow a regular pattern [64][65][66][67][68]. Nevertheless, the focus of this paper is on an 'individual' inhomogeneity like the one shown in figure 1.…”
