Longitudinal development of hand use in children with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy from 18 months to 18 years

Abstract: Unilateral cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common type of CP, affecting approximately 40% of those with CP. [1][2][3] People with unilateral CP typically have difficulties performing activities that require the use of both hands, which affects their everyday life. Bimanual performance is strongly and positively associated with independence in self-care. 4,5 To predict children's future ability to use the affected hand in bimanual activities and to organize interventions for these children throughout childhood,… Show more

“…All components of the ICF were investigated, with most of the studies reporting longitudinal outcomes in more than one component (Figure 1). The activity component was the most investigated (67.9%, n = 38 studies), 16,17,31,32,34–36,38,39,41,46,47,49–51,53,54,56,58,60–66,68,70–72,76–83 followed by body functions and structures (42.9%, n = 24 studies) 32,34,37–39,41,43–45,47,48,51,52,55–59,66,69,73,74,82,84 . Participation (14.2%, n = 8 studies) 33,40,42,48,52,67,75,78 and environmental factors (3.6%, n = 2 studies) 33,42 were the least studied.…”

“…The GMFCS was used to classify and stratify participants in 51 (91.1%) of the 56 studies; 16,17,31,33–49,51–70,72–75,77–81,83,84 14 studies (25%) used the MACS, 32,39,41,42,50,53,61,68,71,75,79,80,82,84 and three studies (5.4%) used the CFCS 36,53,68 . None of the studies grouped participants using the EDACS or the VFCS; only one study did not use any classification system to group children 76 .…”
