“…But marriage can also have a more egalitarian influence-for Blacks, notably when childless, and for affluent Black women. These findings challenge assertions that marrying has no effect on gender ideology (Cunningham et al 2005) or is only a predictor of women's ideology (McBroom 1987). They also modify findings that marriage is associated with less egalitarian ideology only for parents (Moors 2003).…”

As McBroom (1987, p. 449) stated: ''women change in other attitudinal dimensions to be sure, but the change seems to be importantly tied to their immediate life experiences such as changes in employment, marital status, or fertility.''…”

“…A mother, in particular, may be motivated to have sons share traditional female household chores, believing that it is her responsibility to train her sons to participate more equitably than the husbands of her cohort. Thus, the sex-role ideology perspective would argue that the effect of current family type should be stronger for sons, since boys typically perform fewer household chores than girls, and the more liberal sex-role attitudes of mothers in dual-earner families (Huber and Spitze, 1981;McBroom, 1987) would lead them to expect their sons to share household work. Thus: TA: Children in dual-earner families should perform more housework than children in traditional families.…”
