Long-term urodynamic findings following radical prostatectomy and salvage radiotherapy

Abstract: This urodynamic study is one of the first to evaluate long-term urodynamic characteristics in patients treated with SRT. Several urodynamic parameters were affected. This indicates that SRT primarily affects bladder compliance, maximal cystometric capacity and bladder outlet obstruction. LUTS were proven to be strongly related to urodynamic parameters.

“…Conversely, radiotherapy following prostatectomy can cause obliterative endarteritis, tissue necrosis and fibrosis, resulting in VUAS or urethral stricture 41,42 . In a small series of men treated with salvage radiotherapy following RP, a high rate of BOO (43.8%) was found following both treatments 17 …”

“…41,42 In a small series of men treated with salvage radiotherapy following RP, a high rate of BOO (43.8%) was found following both treatments. 17 Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate improves symptoms of OAB in the majority of patients by relieving BOO. 43,44 Despite relieving BOO, OAB can be persistent in 20%-38% of men even after a year following TURP.…”

“…Radiotherapy after radical prostatectomy has been shown to worsen LUTS and QOL 17 . Miyake et al 18 reported the deterioration of storage symptoms, especially frequency, after salvage radiotherapy and Ervandian et al 19 worsened LUTS along with long‐term deterioration of several urodynamic parameters after salvage radiotherapy. These might explain the current results of the insignificant improvement of IPSS soon after AUS implantation and the significantly worsening trend of IPSS in the patients receiving radiotherapy.…”

“…After removing 75 duplicates, 723 articles were screened against title and abstract and 19 articles assessed for full-text eligibility. Five of the nineteen articles were eligible to be included in the final review [7][8][9][10][11] . Reasons for exclusion are listed in Figure 1.…”
