“…OHC concentrations in Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) from Guanabara Bay (Lailson-Brito et al, 2010), a highly contaminated environment from southeast Brazil, and from Paraná State, a less contaminated area (South Brazilian region) (Lailson-Brito et al, 2010), and in franciscana dolphins (Pontoporia blainvillei) from waters of Rio Grande do Sul state (southernmost Brazilian state) (Leonel et al, 2010), were statistically compared with HCB data generated by the present study. Significantly higher HCB concentrations were found for humpback whales than for both franciscana (Leonel et al, 2010) and Guiana dolphins (Lailson-Brito et al, 2010) from the Southern Brazil. The higher volatility of HCB combined with the well-known cold trap effect (Valsaraj and Thibodeaux, 2010) increases the contribution of HCB relatively to other OHCs.…”

“…Cross‐sectional polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) body‐burden age trends for a range of species and climates reported in the literature. Examples include brown trout from the Pyrenees Mountains ( A ), ringed seals from the Canadian Arctic ( B ), ringed seals from the circumpolar Arctic ( C ), Franciscana dolphins from Brazil ( D ), bowhead whales from Alaska ( E ), killer whales from British Columbia ( F ), and polar bears from Alaska ( G ). Total PCBs includes between 21 and 126 congeners depending on the study, except for the trend in brown trout ( A ), which is for PCB‐153 only.…”

“…Thus, many studies observe increasing levels of POPs with organism age in male individuals while those in females are declining or remain constant [2,11,12]. Yet exceptions do occur and include declining POP age trends regardless of sex [8], increasing contamination in females with age but not males [1,2,[11][12][13][14], variable trends among males and females in the same group for different contaminants [14], an apparent lack of age impact on POP concentration across the population [3,20,21], or even variable POP age trends by gender when measured in the same population at different time points [8,22,23].…”
