Long-term survival results and prognostic factors of early gastric cancer

Abstract: Abstract. In spite of the favorable prognosis of early gastric cancer (EGC), recurrence or second primary cancers present in certain patients after curative surgery. It is crucial to identify who are at high risk and when. In the present study, 323 patients with EGC who underwent curative surgery were studied. A total of 22 patients (6.8%) died of recurrence, 9 patients (2.8%) died of a second primary cancer and 65 patients (20.1%) died of comorbid diseases during the 0.3-33 years of follow-up. Among the 22 pa… Show more

“…Although the general good prognosis for LGA, there are many known poor prognosis factors. Multivariate analysis identified nodal status, vessel involvement and histological differentiation as independent prognostic factors for disease-free survival, and gender, age and differentiation were independent influencing factors for overall survival 39 . The development of VTE was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival in multivariate analysis 40 .…”

“…Because of gastric occult onset and strong migration and invasion ability of tumor cells, frequently there has been a regional lymph node metastasis or distant metastasis before treatment, leading to poor comprehensive treatment effects by surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Detection rate of Chinese patients with early gastric cancer was less than 10% [14,15]; most patients have been found to have advanced cancers, and 50% to 80% of patients had lymph node metastasis or other organ invasion and metastasis when undergoing surgery. The 5-year survival rate of advanced gastric cancer has been fluctuating at around 40% -50% [16,17].…”
