Long-term Results of Spinal Cord Injury Therapy Using Mesenchymal Stem Cells Derived From Bone Marrow in Humans

Abstract: Three of the 10 patients with SCI who were directly injected with autologous MSCs showed improvement in the motor power of the upper extremities and in activities of daily living, as well as significant magnetic resonance imaging and electrophysiological changes during long-term follow-up.

“…The studies using OEC used open surgical intervention Lima et al (35), Mackay-Sim et al (49); while Feron et al (34) used OEC as a cellular graft injected directly into the spinal cord under microscopic guidance . However MSC or MNC implantation using surgical procedure did not report superior results justifying the invasive procedure Abdelaziz et al (40), Chernyck et al (37) , Park et al (45). The use of intra-arterial route is limited due to the technical difficulty.…”

“…These cells have been shown to secrete neurotrophic factors, but they do not seem to be able to replace lost neurons. A recent study found that three of ten patients with cervical spinal injury who received their own mesenchymal stem cells -progenitor cells that differentiate to form bone and cartilage -had more power in their upper limbs and less trouble performing daily activities than they did before receiving the stem cells 6 .…”
