Long-term results of out-of-the-bag intraocular lens implantation

Abstract: Rubbing between the IOL optic and iris seems to contribute to the high flare counts in eyes with a sulcus-to-sulcus IOL fixation. A larger haptic angle may be needed to prevent contact between the iris and IOL optic in such cases.

“…30 The IOL rotation and recurrent irritation of the iris are known to cause late UGH syndrome. [31][32][33] Moreover, rubbing between the IOL optic and iris seems to contribute to the high flare counts in eyes with a sulcus-to-sulcus IOL fixation. 33 In our series, consistent vault is maintained between the iris and the IOL, which we consider as one of the reasons for less post-operative uveitis and pigment dispersion.…”

“…However, the results evaluated by slit-lamp may vary widely with different observers and comparison of readings over time is often not accurate. Recently, laser flare-cell photometry has provided a noninvasive and objective measurement for evaluation of aqueous flare and cells and is able to quantify the inflammatory reaction in the anterior chamber and function of the bloodaqueous barrier (BAB) [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. Patients with Behcet's disease typically show a panuveitis frequently associated with severe involvement of the anterior segment.…”
