Alterations of aqueous flare and cells detected by laser flare-cell photometry in patients with Behcet’s disease

Abstract: Both aqueous flare and cells were significantly increased in Behcet's patients with active uveitis and improved after a two-month treatment. Breakdown of the blood-aqueous barrier lasts longer than aqueous cells in these patients.

“…A significant reduction in aqueous flare and cell count was noted 1 month after treatment. Cell counts continued to decrease from 1 to 2 months, but flare values did not change after 1 month and remained mildly elevated (11.6 ± 5.8 ph/ms) compared with healthy controls (4.0 ± 0.6 ph/ms) [28].…”

“…Usefulness of laser photometry has also been reported in larger series of patients with Behçet uveitis [27,28]. One of the studies comprised 78 Behçet patients without ocular involvement, 54 Behçet patients with a uveitis attack and 53 Behçet patients with uveitis in clinical remission for at least 3 months [27].…”

“…Similar flare findings have been reported by others. 37,38 The authors suggested that quantitative flare measures may provide a reliable, non-invasive technique for monitoring the activity of BU, perhaps decreasing the need for frequent FA.…”

“…Besides Europe, where LFP was rapidly integrated for everyday practice in leading centres in France, Germany, Italy, UK, Scandinavia and Switzerland, clinical LFP studies have recently been performed in Turkey and China [9,10]. In this issue Yang and colleagues have followed the evolution of flare in Behçet's uveitis [11].…”
