Abstract:Several unrandomized studies from the current literature confirm that in selected patients with localized renal cell carcinoma (RCC), nephron sparing surgery (NSS) shows to be as effective as radical surgery. In this regard, we evaluated the data from patients treated by using such a conservative approach with a long-term follow-up.
Materials and Methods.
We considered 28 patients (19 M, 9 F; median age 54 years) with unilateral, localized, small (< 4 cm) RCC, submitted to NSS from 1988 to 1994. Only 3 of the… Show more
Minimally invasive approaches to small renal tumors continue to evolve. Cryotherapy is an attractive modality in that it can be delivered in a number of different ways, including laparoscopically and percutaneously. This article addresses the current state of percutaneous approaches to renal masses.

Interstitial laser ablation of the kidney with a diffuser tip fiber produces adequate cell death but small lesions. Further studies with multiple fibers or active monitoring and repositioning of the fiber to produce larger lesions are necessary.
Laparoscopy did not appear to result in underuse of PN. We explain this by suggesting that the PN rate may be influenced by variation in the decision tree itself. Such variation is inherent in complex clinical decision making where EBM guidelines are lacking.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
