Long-Term Results of Balloon Catheter Dilation of Lower Gastrointestinal Tract Stenoses

Abstract: The dilation of benign stenoses of the lower gastrointestinal tract with a balloon catheter is an effective and safe method, which in most cases (70 percent) results in long-term elimination of the obstructive symptoms, so that surgery can be avoided.

“…VGBD has become a common method for treating a variety of gastrointestinal tract strictures, and it is particularly effective in treating patients with esophageal conditions (8,9,(12)(13)(14). Another modality, retrograde endoscopic balloon dilation, has been recommended as a first-line treatment in some cases; it has been proven safe and reliable for treating complete strictures of the hypopharynx (15).…”

“…At the moment, it is difficult to define the relapse risk after endoscopic balloon dilatation, as the published studies [8,[17][18][19] are based on very different follow-up periods, and often do not represent structured prospective longterm studies.…”

“…Valid long-term studies of 5 years or more, which would permit a statement regarding recurrence of strictures and a better comparison with surgical techniques [3,4] , are available so far only in casuistic form and with limited numbers [8,[17][18][19] . We report on our own prospective 10-year long-term study of endoscopic balloon dilatation of strictures in Crohn's disease using a relatively thin balloon (18 mm) and additional treatment with prednisolone.…”

“…El más habitualmente utilizado ha sido la dilatación simple, con o sin colocación de tutor metálico autoexplandible (20), seguida de electroincisión radial (21). Con dilatación se han logrado alrededor de un 70% de buenos resultados a largo plazo (22). Los tutores metálicos presentan numerosas complicaciones y constituirían una medida transitoria de resolver el problema (23).…”
