They also complained that we coded Fromuth and Burkhart's (1989) "surprised" category as neutral. We had good reason to do so: these researchers based their measure of reactions on that of Finkelhor (1979), which in turn reflected that of Landis (1956), both of whom interpreted "surprised" as a neutral response.…”
