Long-term Photo-degradation of Nanofibrous Composites Based on Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) Electrospun Fibers Loaded with Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles

Abstract: Composite mats based on submicron biopolyester fibers and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles have been exploited in medicine and environmental areas, as antibacterial wound dressings or filters. Generally, the resulting mats have to be subjected to UV irradiation in order to promote the formation of reactive oxygen species, thus activating the antimicrobial or photocatalytic effect of ZnO. Therefore, investigation related to the influence of ZnO on poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate) photo-degradation is required. In this co… Show more

“…They electrospinning the polymer/nano-ZnO solutions and the combination of electrospinning of polymer solutions and electrospraying of nano-ZnO dispersions [ 85 ]. A more recent study where researchers used these two integrated techniques is reported by Heriberto Rodríguez-Tobías et al, where, for the first time, an exhaustive examination of the photo-degradation behavior of ZnO-embedded and ZnO-coated PHB (poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate)) mats generated by electrospinning and electrospinning/ electrospraying procedures was conducted [ 86 ].…”

“…In this regard, composite materials based on polymers are particularly relevant and attractive [ 22 ]. Polymeric ferroelectrics, which are non-toxic, biocompatible, chemically inert, flexible, and can be formed into films, offer significant benefits in this area [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 ]. Among them, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a great choice as a matrix for BFO since it is possible to obtain a piezo-photocatalyst similar to those previously reported [ 28 , 29 ].…”
