Long-term performance evaluation of an anoxic sulfur oxidizing moving bed biofilm reactor under nitrate limited conditions

Abstract: An anoxic sulfur-oxidizing moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) treating sulfur and nitrate-contaminated synthetic wastewater was monitored for 306 days under feed nitrogen-to-sulfur (N/S) molar ratios of 0.5, 0.3 and 0.1.

“…Despite increasing popularity of various next generation sequencing techniques, the DGGE method remains as a fast‐performing fingerprinting method to compare the diversity of microbial communities from natural environments (e.g., biofilm, soil, sediment; Doni et al, ; Khanongnuch, Di Capua, Lakaniemi, Rene, & Lens, ; Morales‐Londoño et al, ). During the present study, DGGE was performed using an Ingeny PhorU (Ingeny International, Goes, Netherlands) instrument.…”

“…The complete oxidation to sulfate (and reduction of nitrate to nitrogen gas) stably occurs when the N/S ratio reaches 1.6 (Gommers et al, 1988;Krishnakumar & Manilal, 1999;Reyes et al, 2004). When the nitrate concentration is low, it could be dosed externally, but the dosing must be strictly controlled in practice to minimize operational costs (Khanongnuch et al, 2019). The final product of autotrophic denitrification varies, as shown in Equations 11.6-11.17:…”

“…Several technologies using SOB as the biofilm in a moving bed reactor have been reported. For example, SOB biofilm could remove S 2 O 3 2À and NO 3 À in the wastewater (Khanongnuch et al 2019). SOB biofilm is also used to remove hydrogen sulfide which is the by-product of the anaerobic digestion process of organic wastewater (Lestari et al 2016).…”
