Long-term follow-up of Argentinean patients with hemolytic uremic syndrome who had not undergone dialysis

Abstract: We examined the records of patients with hemolytic uremic syndrome, who had not undergone dialysis during the acute stage, with the aims of evaluating: (1) the outcome after at least 5 years of follow-up; (2) the value of peak serum creatinine as a prognostic marker; (3) the relationship between outcome and time to normalization of renal function. From 1968 to 2000, 1,179 patients were assisted. Forty-two patients (3.6%) died during the acute stage, 478 patients (40.5%) required dialysis and 659 patients (55.9… Show more

“…Publicaciones recientes demuestran que los pacientes que presentaron SHU evolucionaron con microalbuminuria en su seguimiento en relación a pacientes normales [26][27][28] . En ellos, la utilización de medicamentos como los inhibidores de la enzima convertidora de angiotensina o asociados a los bloqueadores de los receptores AT1 de angiotensina II han disminuido la progresión del daño renal no inmunológico 29,30 .…”

“…MAHA is mainly associated to the mechanical damage to red blood cells (RBC) as they pass through the renal microcirculation affected with the thrombotic microangiopathy that characterizes this disorder [3]. The severity of the disease is related to renal, colonic and CNS involvement, and the degree of anemia can be variable, ranging from a mild decrease in hematocrit values to profound anemia that sometimes requires repeated RBC transfusions [3][4][5][6]. However, the intensity and recurrences of hemolytic anemia does not account for the severity of the disease.…”

“…Pediatric nephrologists have been at the forefront of research into HUS, and Pediatric Nephrology has provided a forum for the publication of numerous high-quality reports into experimental models of TMA [7], long-term prognosis after diarrhea-related HUS [8,9], identification of new causes of non-familial atypical HUS [10], and the appropriate treatment of familial atypical HUS [11]. I am confident that this series of Teaching Articles will highlight the key advances made in the past and point the way to research that will lead to better treatments of all forms of TMA and HUS in the future.…”
