Long-term effects of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, and adjustable gastric banding on type 2 diabetes

Abstract: All three bariatric procedures are effective in treating diabetes, with a 3-year follow-up evaluation showing an effect that lasts. The AGB procedure was the least effective. The antidiabetic effect was similarly precocious after GBP and SG compared with AGB. This difference may indicate that a hormonal mechanism may be involved, independent of weight loss.

“…Restrictive LAGB and LSG procedures do not result in significant malabsorption and show high efficacy for weight loss. [20][21][22] All 3 types of procedures used in the present study were performed laparoscopically by the same surgical team at the Medical University of Bialystok Clinical Hospital.…”

“…This proposed difference between groups is a conservative estimate based on the results from the only 2 previous studies comparing the effect of gastric restriction versus RYGB procedures on insulin sensitivity using the hyperinsulinemic clamp procedure (43,44). In both studies, insulin-stimulated glucose disposal was more than 200% greater after RYGB than after restrictive surgical procedures.…”

“…1). The medium-term efficacy of LSG is superior to laparoscopic AGB (LAGB) (1,146,168) (11,31,66,175,192), the long-term efficacy of LSG may be less favorable. Two recent studies demonstrate significant weight regain after 5 yr (17, 75), though this could be related to variation in surgical technique; the LSG procedure has evolved over time and, on the whole, sleeve diameter has been tightened.…”
