Long term effects of exercise training on physical activity level and quality of life in elderly coronary patients — A three‐ to six‐year follow‐up

Abstract: It is important to include elderly patients in cardiac rehabilitation programmes after an acute coronary event, since even a short period of supervised exercise training has the potential to positively influence physical activity level for as long as three to six years.

“…One further methodologically less rigorous meta-analysis confirmed these findings [43]. In contrast, the only two primary studies reporting cardiac events [28,29] observed increased event rates associated with exercise training, which resulted in a similar finding in our meta-analysis (Figs 2 and 3 and Table 3). The studies were of lower methodological quality, however.…”

“…The easy application of EQ-5D is its main advantage. This perception is confirmed by many authors studied (Hage et al, 2003;Austin et al, 2005;Grace et al, 2007;Austin et al, 2009). The EQ-5D applicability to specific diseases is controversy.…”

“…The EQ-5D applicability to specific diseases is controversy. The reasons for the debate are based on the fact that some researchers consider that generic instruments are less sensible to changes over time (Hage et al, 2003;Vuorialho et al, 2006;Datta et al, 2008) and to recommend the use of specific tools to evaluate certain diseases (Hage et al, 2003). Another authors have confirmed the reliability of this instrument to evaluate specific health conditions (Jakola et al, 2010;Davis et al, 2012).…”

“…However, our choice (3 years gains) is conservative and the threshold, to be considered as a 3 years life expectancy gain in cardiovascular patients, is high [19, 23]. Moreover, Hage et al [33] studied physical activity level and health related quality of life three to 6 years after a myocardial infarction in elderly Sweden patients. They concluded that after a coronary event, a supervised physical activity program has the potential to positively influence activity and quality of life for as long as three to 6 years.…”
