Objective: To characterize long-stay institutions for the elderly in respect to physical-structural and organizational aspects.Method: This descriptive, cross-sectional, quantitative research was carried out in four long-stay institutions for the elderly in Salvador -Bahia, Brazil, between September and November 2013. Data were collected from the technical officers of the institutions using a questionnaire based on National Health Surveillance Agency standards. Results: This study highlights a partial compliance with current regulations both in respect to the physical-structural and organizational aspects. The elderly are exposed to an environment that is sometimes unhealthy with risk factors for health problems. Conclusion and implications for practice: There is need for adjustments in the institutions to comply with current legislation. This study shows the importance of a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive care of institutionalized elderly, with emphasis on the role of nurses in the qualification of institutions and valorization of the elderly. Evidencia-se um atendimento parcial à regulamentação vigente tanto nos aspectos físico-estruturais quanto organizacionais. Os idosos são expostos a um ambiente, por vezes, insalubre e a fatores de riscos para agravos à saúde. Conclusão e implicações para a prática: Há necessidade de ajustes nas instituições para o atendimento à legislação vigente. Defende-se a importância de uma equipe multiprofissional para o cuidado integral às pessoas idosas institucionalizadas, com ênfase no papel da enfermagem para a qualificação das instituições e valorização dos idosos.Palavras-chave: Idoso; Instituição de Longa Permanência para Idosos; Saúde do idoso; Estrutura dos serviços. resumenObjetivo: Caracterizar instituciones de larga estadía para los ancianos como los aspectos físicos estructurales y organizativas.Método: Transversal, la investigación cuantitativa descriptiva, llevado a cabo en cuatro instituciones de larga estadía para las personas mayores de Salvador -Bahia, Brasil, entre septiembre y noviembre de 2013. Los datos fueron recogidos entre los responsables técnicos de las instituciones a través de un cuestionario basado en estándares Agencia Nacional de Vigilancia Sanitaria. Resultados: Este estudio pone de manifiesto un cumplimiento parcial de la normativa vigente, tanto en los aspectos físicos y estructurales como de organización. Los ancianos están expuestos a un ambiente a veces factores insalubres y de riesgo de problemas de salud. Conclusión e implicaciones para la práctica: Existe la necesidad de ajustes en las instituciones para el cumplimiento de la legislación vigente. Aboga por la importancia de un equipo multidisciplinario para la atención integral a las personas mayores institucionalizadas, con énfasis en el papel de la enfermería para la calificación de las instituciones y la apreciación de las personas mayores.Palabras clave: Anciano; Hogares para ancianos; Salud del anciano; Estructura de los servicios. ResumoObjetivo: Identificar os desafios e perspectivas de trabalho nas instituições de longa permanência para idosos (ILPI) na interpretação da equipe multiprofissional. Metodologia: Estudo de abordagem qualitativa, exploratória e descritiva, recorte da pesquisa intitulada "Cenários de cuidados de longa duração: possibilidades avaliativas, interventivas e educacionais na atenção gerontológica". A pesquisa foi desenvolvida no município de Passo Fundo-RS, de março a agosto de 2013, contemplando 14 ILPIs. Resultados: As situações desafiadoras do trabalho aludem ao aspecto de gestão, sistematização de ações, manutenção, convivência e mediação de conflitos profissionais e interpessoais, e no que se refere ao paradigma da institucionalização. As perspectivas da atuação em ILPIs correspondem à valorização com inserção profissional nos cenários de atenção, considerando a Gerontologia especialidade emergente no cumprimento dos preceitos legais e com maior incentivo do poder público. Conclusões: Os desafios são múltiplos e de ordem diversa. A perspectiva é que, num futuro próximo, possa existir uma equipe multiprofissional mais homogênea atendendo à legislação vigente. AbstractObjective: To identify the challenges and prospects of work in long-term institutions for the elderly (ILPI) in the viewpoint of the multidisciplinary team. Methodolog y: Qualitative, exploratory and descriptive study, part of a research entitled "Scenarios of long-term care: evaluative, intervention and educational possibilities in geriatric attention". Research was conducted in the city of Passo Fundo-RS, Brazil, from March to August 2013, involving 14 ILPI's. Results: The challenging situations at work allude to management aspect, systematic actions, maintenance, coexistence and mediation of professional and interpersonal conflicts, as well as to the institutionalization paradigm.

This paper proposes and describes an unsupervised computational model that monitors an elderly person who lives alone and issues alarms when a risk to the elderly person’s well-being is identified. This model is based on data extracted exclusively from passive infrared motion sensors connected to a ZigBee wireless network. The proposed monitoring system and model is non-intrusive, does not capture any images, and does not require any interaction with the monitored person. Thus, it is more likely to be adopted by members of the elderly population who might reject other more intrusive or complex types of technology. The developed computational model for activity discovery employs a kernel estimator and local outlier factor calculation, which are reliable and have a low computational cost. This model was tested with data collected over a period of 25 days from two elderly volunteers who live alone and have fairly different routines. The results demonstrate the model’s ability to learn relevant behaviors, as well as identify and issue alarms for atypical activities that can be suggestive of health problems. This low-cost, minimalistic sensor network approach is especially suited to the reality of underdeveloped (and developing) countries where assisted living communities are not available and low cost and ease of use are paramount.
