Long sequence of Quaternary Rocks in the Heidelberg Basin Depocentre

Abstract: Abstract. A description and classification of the successions of the new scientific core drillings at Heidelberg is presented. Since 2002 drilling and research activities were ongoing in the Heidelberg Basin (HDB), as a mid-continental sedimentary archive within the Upper Rhine Graben (URG), Germany. The HDB is supposed to host one of the longest continuous successions of Quaternary sediments in Europe, due to continuous subsidence of the basin and sediment input from various sources. The HDB is about half-way… Show more

“…To make the derived proxies comparable for regional stratigraphical correlation and to enable the interpretation of environmental changes, several relative and absolute dating methods have been applied to establish an integrated chronology for the URG, such as regional biostratigraphy by palynology (Knipping , ; Ellwanger et al . ; Weidenfeller & Knipping ; Hahne et al . ), luminescence dating (Lauer et al .…”

“…In this paper, only results from the fi rst borehole (0 -190 m; UniNord1) have been evaluated. According to ELLWANGER et al (2008), only about one third of the succession consists of fi ne-grained i.e. silt-dominated deposits.…”
