Long non-coding RNAs in breast cancer metastasis

Abstract: Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death among women. Recurrence of primary tumor and metastasis to distant body parts are major causes of breast cancer-associated mortality. The 5-year survival rate for women with metastatic breast cancer is only 25–30%. Breast cancer metastasis is a series of processes involved with EMT, invasion, loss of cell to cell adhesion, alteration in cell phenotype, extravasation, microenvironment of the tumor, and colonization to the secondary sites. Epigenetic mod… Show more

“…The migrated cells proliferate and survive in the secondary niche with the help of the components and cells within the tissue microenvironment 112 . Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays an essential role in tumor metastasis in which non-motile epithelial cells are transformed into motile mesenchymal cells containing invasive properties 113 .…”

“…reviews have discussed the role and significance of lncRNAs in the EMT of tumors (6,20,25). However, to the best of our knowledge, there has not been a review on the role of lncRNAs in EMT in HCC.…”

“…LncRNAs are abnormally expressed in tumor cells and play an important regulatory role in tumor proliferation in such cancers as hepatocellular carcinoma ( 22 ), breast cancer ( 23 ), and gastric cancer ( 24 ). In addition, a large number of recent reviews have discussed the role and significance of lncRNAs in the EMT of tumors ( 6 , 20 , 25 ). However, to the best of our knowledge, there has not been a review on the role of lncRNAs in EMT in HCC.…”

“…Alterations in the expression of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), including circular RNA (circRNA) [ 12 , 13 , 14 ], microRNA (miRNA) [ 15 , 16 ], and long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) [ 17 , 18 ] have been reported in breast tumors and in circulation in BC patients, with specific alterations in endocrine resistance [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ]. miRNAs and lncRNAs are epigenetic regulators of human cancers [ 23 ].…”
