Long Non-Coding RNAs and Their Roles in Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer

Abstract: As a leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, lung cancer is a collection of diseases with diverse etiologies which can be broadly classified into small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Lung cancer is characterized by genomic and epigenomic alterations; however, mechanisms underlying lung tumorigenesis remain to be elucidated. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a group of non-coding RNAs that consist of ⩾200 nucleotides but possess low or no protein-coding potential. Accumulatin… Show more

“…Intronic lncRNAs initiate inside an intron in either direction and terminate without overlapping exons. Finally, the bidirectional lncRNAs are less than 1000 base pairs downstream from the transcription initiation site and are on the complementary strand of protein-coding genes [29-31]. LncRNAs are predominately located in the nucleus, and the functional mechanisms of lncRNAs have not yet well elucidated.…”

“…Accumulating evidence suggests that abnormal lncRNA expression is often observed in various cancers and contributes to the initiation and development of several cancers 6,7. For NSCLC, some lncRNAs have been identified to function as oncogenes or tumor suppressors and have potential as diagnostic or prognostic markers for patients with NSCLC 8,9…”
