Loneliness in Infancy: Harry Harlow, John Bowlby and Issues of Separation

Abstract: In this contribution, the authors give an overview of the different studies on the effect of separation and deprivation that drew the attention of many in the 1940s and 1950s. Both Harlow and Bowlby were exposed to and influenced by these different studies on the so called 'hospitalization' effect. The work of Bakwin, Goldfarb, Spitz, and others is discussed and attention is drawn to films that were used to support new ideas on the effects of maternal deprivation. Keywords Separation . “…Contrary to most of the predominantly empirical journals where history does not get a prominent focus, in Integrative Psychological & Behavioral Science such link is our trademark. So we look at the future of attachment theory (Keller 2008) through examining its past (Harlow 2008;Mason 2008;van der Horst and van der Veer 2008). The resulting challenge to our contemporary study of attachment is twofold-the study of affective boding processes (rather than "attachment types") in different cultural conditions, and re-conceptualizing attachment as a bio-cultural phenomenon.…”

“…Ethical constraints on conducting studies with humans have highlighted the need for reliable and robust animal models that researchers can utilize to identify relevant neurobiological processes (Guzman et al, 2016 ). Since the work of Harlow and colleagues beginning in the 1940s, which involved raising infant macaques with cloth and wire mothers (reviewed in van der Horst and van der Veer, 2008 ), researchers have sought to develop useful animal models of early life adversity. These and other more recent studies have shown obvious behavioral abnormalities in monkeys subjected to early life stress (ELS) (Schino et al, 2001 ; Corcoran et al, 2012 ; Howell et al, 2014 ).…”

“…Lowrey concluded that children should not be raised in institutions (hospitals) because children experience an isolation-type effect due to the lack of community and touch. It is because of this isolation that the children were beginning to develop maladaptive behaviours (Van der Horst and Van der Veer, 2008).…”
