Exploratory work at a proposed hydroelectric site on the Peace River in British Columbia included excavation of several adits and a test chamber about 11 m wide, 7.5 m high, and 45 m in length. Most of these excavations, in a Cretaceous slaking shale, were lined with steel fibre reinforced shotcrete. Laboratory tests indicate that the properties of the steel fibre shotcrete compare favourably with those of plain shotcrete. Field tests suggest that the steel fibre shotcrete is equal to wire fabric reinforced shotcrete in load-carrying capacity and for support of underground excavations. Some of the adits were excavated more than 5 years ago and the shotcrete continues to perform well. It is suggested that steel fibre shotcrete is also suitable for underground support in most other rock types and offers cost savings over the use of wire fabric reinforced shotcrete. Un travail d'exploration sur un site proposC pour un projet hydroClectrique sur la rivikre de la Paix en ColombieBritannique a comport6 l'excavation de plusieurs galeries et d'une chambre d'essai d'environ 11 m de largeur par 7,s m de hauteur et 45 m de longueur. La plupart de ces excavations faites dans un schiste ramollissant du CrCtacC ont CtC revCtues d'un bCton soufflC renforct B la fibre d'acier. Des essais de laboratoire indiquent que les propriCtCs du bCton soufflC avec fibres d'acier se comparent favorablement avec le btton soufflC ordinaire. Les essais sur le terrain suggkrent que le bCton soufflC avec fibres d'acier est Cgal au bCton souffle arm6 de filet d'acier en terme de capacitC de support de charges et d'excavations souterraines. The site bedrock consists of flat-lying Shaftesbury shales of Cretaceous age. Upon surface exposure, these rocks weather and slake quickly and are prone to breakdown by freezing and thawing, unloading, and chemical weathering. In the context of existing post‐tensioned concrete bridges, a reliable assessment of load carrying capacity is still a challenging issue. The effective concrete compressive strength is related to the degradation process of post‐tensioned cables which cannot be detected by visual inspection only. Currently, in‐situ test methods combined with destructive techniques have been used as common methodology to assess either the concrete compressive strength and post‐tension cables losses. Yet, in‐situ tests are indirect approaches, and can be affected by several uncontrolled factors, playing a misleading role in strength determination. In this perspective, the paper aims to firstly introduce a theoretical background of pull‐out tests with their developments and limitations. Then, configuration test has been discussed to obtain reliable strength relationship, with emphasis on post‐installed inserts for pull‐out test. The main current standard provisions have been compared. This study intends to set the basis to test existing post‐tensioned concrete bridges with modified pull‐out test, having no effects on the structural integrity.
