Locally recurrent breast carcinoma: the effect of adjuvant chemotherapy on prognosis.

Abstract: A group of 72 patients who had received radiotherapy between 1972 and 1980 for isolated local-regional recurrence of breast cancer was studied; 38 had received adjuvant chemotherapy and 34 had not. The two groups were comparable except for the initial nodal status and median time from mastectomy to recurrence. Outcome was not significantly different for the two groups in terms of response to radiotherapy, incidence of re-recurrence, distant metastases, and three-year survival. The length of the disease-free in… Show more

“…F ollowing mastectomy, the most common site of locoregional failure is the chest wall (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9). With an adequate axillary dissection, the second most common site is the supraclavicular fossa (2)(3)(4)(5)7,8).…”

“…Results should be presented in terms of both intent to treat recurrence. However, several previous studies [37][38][39][40] have suggested that salvage of an isolated locoregional and treatment actually received so that the reader can assess the clinical relevance of the findings. In the trial, recurrence in patients who have received postmastectomy adjuvant chemotherapy is at best 50%.…”

“…There are no published data available from a prospective randomized clinical trial and data from retrospective series are conflicting. [22][23][24][25] After breast conservation surgery and RT for early stage breast cancer, the incidence of LRR is approximately 10-20% at 10 years. 26,27 The standard treatment for isolated breast recurrences in such patients is mastectomy, with a majority of patients alive at 5 years after surgery.…”
