Locally Delivered Minocycline and Guided Tissue Regeneration to Treat Post‐Juvenile Periodontitis. A Case Report

Abstract: A case of post‐juvenile periodontitis in a 28‐year‐old female patient is described along with new periodontal treatment modalities. Administration of minocycline‐HCl with local drug delivery system was introduced as a part of initial periodontal therapy following microbiological and immunological examinations. The lesions were subsequently treated by guided tissue regeneration, which resulted in considerable gain of attachment with minimal recession of marginal gingiva. This observation suggests that the local… Show more

“…Thus, when the gingival status was compared between Group A and Group B, a significant improvement was observed on day 30, day 90, and day 180 in the test sites [Graph 2]. This is consistent with the findings of the studies conducted by Muller et al .,[17] Vansteenberghe et al .,[10] Saito et al .,[12] Jones et al .,[13] Timmerman et al .,[14] Radvar et al ,[18] Hagiwara et al .,[15] Vansteenberghe et al .,[16] and Kinane et al . “…The evaluation of subgingival microflora was not performed in the subjects of the present study, mainly due to the cost involved. A previous report by our group suggested the efficacy of local drug delivery of minocycline-HCl as an adjunctive modality in periodontal regeneration 19) . The effect of antimicrobial agents with EMD treatment is another area that needs to be investigated.…”

“…Adjunctive use of LDD agents like controlled release biodegradable chlorhexidine gluconate chip [61, 62], tetracycline fibers [63, 64], and minocycline-Hcl gel [65] has been tried in aggressive periodontitis with superior clinical outcomes. The decision to use local anti-infective adjunctive therapy remains a matter of individual clinical judgment, the phase of treatment, and the patient's status and preferences.…”
