Localization of two calcium binding proteins, calbindin (28 kD) and parvalbumin (12 kD), in the vertebrate retina

Abstract: We used immunocytochemistry to locate two calcium binding proteins, calbindin (CaB) and parvalbumin (PV), in the retina of goldfish, frog, chick, rat, guinea pig, dog, and man. The location of CaB depended on the type of dominant photoreceptor cells in birds and mammals. In cone-dominant retinas such as those of the chick, CaB-like immunoreactivity was found in the cones, cone bipolars, and ganglion cells. Amacrine cells 5-12 microns across were also labeled. In rod-dominant retinas, such as those of the rat, … Show more

“…The location of these layers suggests that they are composed of amacrine cell processes. In agreement, parvalbumin expression was found in amacrine and displaced amacrine cells in chicken, rat, and dog (Hamano et al 1990). …”

“…Parvalbumin is another Ca 21 -binding protein (Hamano et al 1990), and its expression was restricted to amacrine cells in the INL and some displaced amacrine cells found in the ganglion cell layer (GCL). In addition, two fiber layers in the central part of the IPL stained positive for parvalbumin.…”

“…Calbindin is a cone marker in a variety of species (Hamano et al 1990) and has been shown to label both large single cones and double cones in salamander (Deng et al 2001). Doublelabeling of CB1 receptors and calbindin was observed in the terminals of cone photoreceptors (Fig.…”

“…The immunolocalization of CB has been described in retina and other structures of the visual pathways in different species (Hamano, 1990;Johnson, 1995;Mize, 1999). In our laboratory, it has been demonstrated that CB appears very early in the embryonic period of chick retina and shows changes in distribution along development and after hatching, which indicates that Ca 2+ homeostasis in retina is well regulated, probably to avoid excessive accumulation of the cation (Tolosa de Talamoni, 2002).…”
