Localization of Omni-Directional Mobile Device in Multipath Environments

Abstract: Abstract-This paper presents a comprehensive Non Line of Sight (NLOS) localization scheme in a multipath environment where the scatterers with smooth surfaces are aligned parallel or perpendicular to each other. It leverages on the estimation of Angle of Arrival (AOA) and Time of Arrival (TOA) of the omni-directional mobile device's signal received at the reference devices. Unlike the conventional Line of Sight (LOS) localization schemes that rely on the various mitigation techniques to mitigate the multipaths… Show more

“…The characteristics of our ray-tracing model will be described in next sections. Another advantage of the proposed approach is that while most of the previously developed approaches locate the mobile station in a 2D-space [4,19], our method is able to find the mobile station position in 3D-space. Moreover, our proposed method does not require the installation of an extra sensor network.…”

“…Indoor localization is not an easy problem to solve because of multipath effects [3,4], NLoS conditions and other considerations such as reflecting objects, the presence of moving people and furniture. Moreover, due to the development of new radio access standards, such as Wi-Max, it is necessary to explore new techniques to improve the precision of localization using alternative detection methods.…”

“…During the last years, several techniques for RF-based indoor localization systems [1][2][3][4] have been developed. Some of them are based on the determination of the direction of arrival (DoA) [5][6][7] or the time of arrival (ToA) [8], but in both cases, multipath effects reduce their efficiency.…”

“…Whichever indoor wireless technology is involved, the purpose of localization schemes is to find the unknown position of a mobile station (MS) given a set of measurements called localization metrics. These metrics could be the measured time-of-arrival (TOA) (Golden & Bateman, 2007), angle-of-arrival (AOA) (Seow & Tan, 2008) or received-signal-strength (RSS) ) of the MS's signal at the reference devices or APs. Techniques based on RSS require channel modeling and they are not flexible because they present high variability to environmental changes; even though building and updating a RSS database is much easier in indoor environments than in wide urban areas.…”
