Abstract: These results suggest that a local intraoral inflammation may be associated with the pathogenesis of these common headaches.

“…As local inflammation has been proposed to support migraine pain [17], [18], [19], [20], we sought to investigate if a special phenotype of trigeminal ganglia (responsible for conveying nociceptive signals to the brainstem) consistent with propensity to neuroinflammation might be observed.…”

“…Another possibility is that, during a migraine attack, activated macrophages and other non-neuronal cells might induce a meningeal “sterile inflammation” [17], [18], a phenomenon that can contribute to strong headache when associated with local production of inflammatory substances [9], [19]. Furthermore, it has been reported that inflammation in the broad trigeminal nerve territory is often observed during migraine attacks [20] so that acute administration of corticosteroids has been tested to block pain, albeit with mixed results [21]. It is, however, unclear how common these mechanisms are to the various migraine subtypes.…”

“…15 Indeed, local inflammation may play a role in the pathogenesis of migraine. 16,17 Statins have antiinflammatory properties 14 and, thus, could influence this component. Furthermore, in patients with typical aura with migraine, there is an impairment in the adaptive cerebral hemodynamic mechanisms.…”
