Local Food Campaign in a Globalization Context: A Systematic Review

Abstract: As a basic commodity, food has undergone thorough globalization, with the global food market totaling 1392 billion USD in 2019. Despite such a great amount of global food trade, the idea of favouring the consumption of local food, or local food campaigns, has won ever growing attention and advocacy in recent years as an effort to enhance social and environmental sustainability. This systematic review study draws wisdom from the extant literature and provides critical thinking on how local food differs from non… Show more

“…Although the issues and psychological mechanisms underlying the charity advertising are very different from those of agri-food products, similar concepts can be, in principle, applied to both. Just as the act of giving can help solve a problematic situation, the consumption of agri-food products rooted in the local area can be presented as a possible solution to problems such as pollution, communication asymmetry between consumer and producer, and the low perception of safety associated with industrial products [ 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ].…”

“…The future food cannot bypass local food production and processing, and challenges in resolving food security and nutrition must be solved through research. The result of new and endogenous food has shown its efficiency in increasing the resilience of the local population in many developing countries (Willett et al, 2019;Jia, 2021). Despite climate change and extreme weather challenges, scientific research has come up with solutions to contribute to global food security and tackle malnutrition around the globe, including techniques and technologies from many disciplines, ranging from biotechnology and engineering to newer fields such as nanotechnology (Meyerding et al, 2019).…”

“…Despite climate change and extreme weather challenges, scientific research has come up with solutions to contribute to global food security and tackle malnutrition around the globe, including techniques and technologies from many disciplines, ranging from biotechnology and engineering to newer fields such as nanotechnology (Meyerding et al, 2019). Indeed, during a United Nation's conference on the role of science, technology, and innovation in ensuring food security by 2030, it was stipulated in their second goal that only adopted measures can ensure the proper functioning of food commodity markets and their derivatives and facilitate timely access to market information on items such as food reserves to tackle extreme food price volatility (Jia, 2021;Kane-Potaka et al, 2021).…”

“…However, at the same time, the respective share of the local products determines the sustainability of the food system. There are products that can be produced more efficiently on a global level, where the transport savings do not outweigh more input of land or productivity losses, if produced locally [15][16][17]. In contrast, when considering other dimensions of the food system, such as biodiversity or the distribution of added value, local production can outperform global production [18].…”
