ABSTRACT. This paper introduces the use of digital image correlation for the measurement of surface displacements in the neighbourhood of a crack tip, both at the macro-and micro-scale. Various methods of interpreting the measured data and producing a crack driving force are then discussed, including the use of the full CJP model. A reduced set of parameters are then proposed, corresponding to the three principal interaction forces between the plastic enclave and the surrounding elastic material. Our own results, and those of Vasco Olmo, previously reported in the literature are then reanalysed using this new framework, and excellent agreement between two independent experiments is obtained. Implications for the analysis of further data sets are then discussed.

The present authors have previously proposed a novel 'plastic inclusion' approach for dealing with the local plasticity which occurs at the tip of a growing fatigue crack. This meso-scale model provides a modified set of crack tip stress intensity factors that include the magnitude of plastic wake-induced crack tip shielding and which have the potential to help resolve some long-standing controversies associated with plasticity-induced closure. The present work extends the CJP model to deal with the case of mixed Mode I and Mode II loading and thus opens up enhanced possibilities for testing it on inclined cracks in metallic specimens. This extension requires the addition of only one new force parameter to the model, i.e. an anti-symmetric shear force on either side of the crack.

Untersuchung der Mikroschädigung in Baustahl mit ESPI

Es wird eine Studie zur stark lokalisierten Mikroschädigung während der Risseinleitung unter zyklischer Beanspruchung am Baustahl vorgestellt. Hierfür werden gekerbte Proben mit einer Beanspruchung im High‐Cycle‐Fatigue‐(HCF‐)Bereich belastet. Die Bauteiloberfläche im Bereich der Kerbe wird mit der Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) inspiziert, einem Verfahren zur hochauflösenden und flächenhaften Messung von Dehnungen. Dies geschieht in diskreten Abständen von wenigen Tausend Lastwechseln. Die Auswertung der Messungen zeigt mit zunehmender Materialermüdung eine Lokalisierung sowie Akkumulation der Dehnungen. Die vorgestellten Ergebnisse entstanden im Rahmen eines laufenden Forschungsvorhabens des Graduiertenkollegs 2075 „Modelle für die Beschreibung der Zustandsänderung bei Alterung von Baustoffen und Tragwerken“. Dieses hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die Zustandsentwicklung von Bauwerken unter mechanischer und chemischer Beanspruchung auf unterschiedlichen zeitlichen und räumlichen Skalen zu beschreiben und zu bewerten.
