Local Changes in Microcirculation and the Analgesic Effects of Acupuncture: A Laser Doppler Perfusion Imaging Study

Abstract: These results suggested that repeated manipulation induced higher local microcirculatory changes that were correlated with the analgesic effects at the relevant sites. The findings suggest that a proper dose of acupuncture stimulation might be essential to elicit the acupuncture effects.

“…e manipulation of acupuncture is a key component in the treatment process, and different manipulations may result in significantly different outcomes [24]. Acupoint ST36 of the stomach meridian of Foot-Yangming is an important acupoint for the regulation of gastric motility, as shown in several studies [25,26]. e present study confirmed that different manipulations on ST36 had varying effects on gastric electrical amplitude and frequency.…”

“…For myofascial disorder, what will happen when it is needled directly? Acupuncture was shown to trigger a local increase in adenosine in human subjects [49,50] and to increase local microcirculation [40,41]. It is still controversial whether a trigger point is a central or peripheral phenomenon [11].…”

“…Furthermore, both SP and CGRP were significantly lower in the acupotomy group than the model group, which is consistent with the common observation of decreased pain after TrP treatment. Acupuncture increases local nitric oxide and microcirculation [40,41], so local microcirculation in TrPs should be evaluated before and after needling to determine whether it dilutes algogenic substances.…”

“…In addition, improved microcirculation coupled with analgesic effects of needle stimulation could bring about long term improvements. Given the self-reported improvement the patient has experienced, acupuncture may be an option for those suffering from arthritis who wish to reduce their reliance on medication [8][9]. One particular issue of note is that the patient is on Plavix, an anticoagulant prescribed to those who are unable to take aspirin as the standard blood thinner (either due to allergy or contradicting drug interactions), which is listed with the side effect of joint pain, and in some instances, the uncommon side effect of acute osteoarthritis.…”
