Lobectomy for pulmonary hydatid cyst

Abstract: Although parenchymal sparing surgery is the most appropriate for the treatment of hydatid cysts, rarely lobectomy is needed. We aimed to retrospectively evaluate the cases in which we had to perform lobectomy due to hydatid cyst. Materials and methods:A total of 36 (1.88%) patients that underwent lobectomy (n = 35) and pneumonectomy (n = 1) from among 1909 patients operated on for hydatid cyst in our hospital between 1992 and 2012 were retrospectively evaluated. Results: Among the patients, 35 underwent lobecto… Show more

“…It is an important health problem in regions where people earn the living by agriculture and livestock raising, while veterinary services, public health and preventive policies are poorly offered [11]. In our study the resection rate was (20.83%) and it's higher than other studies, Dakak et al (9.2%) [4] , Kavukcu et al (7%) [12] , Bagheri et al (10.3%) [13], Yekeler et al (1.88%) [14] , Ceran et al (9.3%) [15] . The explanation of this high rate atelectasis non-inflating big HC destroyed lobe proximity…”

“…We also think that preferring resection is a very invasive approach due to presence of multiple cysts in the same lobe. 13) Perforation is the most frequent complication of pulmonary hydatid cysts. In the literature, the perforation rates were stated as 24.7%-61%.…”

“…Since the era of Galen, hydatid disease was introduced to medicine when Thebesius described this entity in the 17th century. Its origin thought to be in Iceland and to have been brought to continental Europe by dogs accompanying whaleboats in the 18th century [ 1 ]. Geographic areas that have highest infestation rates are those in which there is continues contact between humans and certain domestic carnivores such as cats, dogs and some ungulates as sheep [ 2 ].…”

Echinococcosis is endemic to the Mediterranean region, South America, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, Alaska, and Canada, where it is widespread among native American tribes [ 1 ]. Although no body part can be spared from hydatid cysts (HCs), they mostly affect the liver and lungs [ 3 ].…”
