Objetivo: Analisar o perfil sociodemográfico e clínico dos pacientes no pós-operatório de confecção de estoma intestinal. Material e método: Estudo de abordagem quantitativa, descritiva, realizado no período de agosto a outubro de 2015, em um serviço filantrópico de referência em oncologia, localizado em Teresina, capital da província do Piauí, Brasil. Um questionário sociodemográfico, clínico e um exame físico com ênfase na avaliação do abdome e do estoma foram aplicados em 56 pacientes. Resultados: Perfil sociodemográfico: idade média de 57,75 anos, predominantemente mulheres (67,9%), do interior do Piauí (62,5%), residentes em áreas urbanas (69,6%), raça mulata (53,6%), religião católica (78,6%), com ensino fundamental incompleto (37,5%) e renda até um salário mínimo (67,9%). Perfil clínico: 42,9% tinham câncer de reto como diagnóstico médico, 85,7% tinham colostomia, em 76,8% a cirurgia era eletiva e não demarcada (57,1%), com equipamento coletor de 1 peça (51,8%), boa fixação da equipe de coleta (87,5%) e estoma com boa função (89,3%). Conclusão: A assistência ao estomizado deve estar embasada no conhecimento científico do processo de enfermagem e identificar as principais necessidades de cada paciente, de acordo com seus perfis sociodemográficos e clínicos.

The colostomized person's perceptions regarding sexuality and sexual activity is a major component of quality of life and nursing care, however due to several limitations, the questionnaire only approach, although validated for such applications, has not enough resolution, due to its qualitative approach, to capture more delicate aspects of the impact of an ostomy onto a otherwise healthy patient. In order to correct such bias, a exploratory-descriptive study of a qualitative approach based on Bardain's content analysis was conducted. 80 colostomized participants were recruited from Stomatology Outpatient Clinics in the Hospital de Base, Regional Hospital of Asa Norte and the Regional Hospital of Gama, Distrito Federal, Brazil. Data was collected through a clinical and sociodemographic questionnaire, as well as an individual interview. The results are presented in five categories: self-concept, leakage issues, odor and gases, stigma, sexual activity and companionship. The analysis suggests that the fulfillment of nursing care ideals, through clear and objective communication, results in the colostomized person's care and can favor in the acceptance of their new way of living. The exchange of knowledge and practices between the colostomized patient and the medical care support crew, in special the nursing care, allows the establishment of strategies that contribute gradually to the full health care, promoting the improvement of the QoL of both the colostomized person as well his/her partner. It is concluded that health services should provide care process in health and nursing, with the purpose of guaranteeing means for the planning of a holistic implementation of health care. This planning should include the psychological support and the educational process that develops one's ability for self-care, which may interfere in the role of sexuality and sexual activity, in addition to the physiological, psychological and social issues.

Background & Aim: Ostomy surgery is used to provide a means of collecting waste through a channel. However, ostomy can produce functional problems and major changes in adaptability and life satisfaction among the patients. This study attempts to investigate the relationship between adaptability and life satisfaction among ostomy patients. Methods & Materials: This study is descriptive-correlational. 100 ostomy patients referring to Iran Ostomy Association were selected and studied using continuous sampling method and questionnaires of demographic information, Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), and Bell Adjustment Inventory (BAI). Results: The mean ± standard deviation of life satisfaction scores and adaptability scores were 16.8±4.4 (of 35) and 53.1±23.7, respectively. A positive and significant correlations were observed between life satisfaction and adjustment (r=0.597, p<0.001), and also adjustment dimensions, including home (r=0.585, p<0.001), health (r=0.611, p<0.001), social (r= 0.460, p<0.001), emotional (r=0.538, p<0.001) and occupational adjustment (r=0.380, p<0.001). Conclusion: According to the results, there was a positive and significant relationship between life satisfaction and adaptability. Thus, therapeutic department members have to help improve life satisfaction among ostomy patients by facilitating adaptability.
