Living systems theory and social entropy theory

Abstract: Although Living Systems Theory (LST) has been widely recognized for its major contributions to scholarship in general and systems theory in particular, the full extent of its contribution has never been explicitly presented. The purpose of this paper is twofold: first to discuss LST, and then to relate it to Social Entropy Theory (SET). The paper first presents 20 major contributions of LST. This is not an exhaustive list, but is simply designed to present simultaneously the wide range of contributions made by… Show more

“…Still, the law of entropy states that basically anything, if left to itself, through time will become an organization of ever-increasing complexity (Romeiro & Earp, 2013). Without becoming too technical, social entropy predicts natural decay within social systems, and movement towards breakdown of societies over time (Bailey, 2006). In the dismal light of entropy, the optimistic key words are 'if left to itself' .…”

“…The next step is to go beyond the analysis of boundary actions, to the full study of flows between systems. Further exegesis is found in Bailey (2005Bailey ( , 2006a. The increasing complexity of future societies, along with electronic advances, will ensure an impressive array of information flows of various sorts, both intra-systemic and inter-systemic.…”

“…Our attempt to devise an informationcentric theory for socio-technical systems enables a macroscopic view of the emergent output of complex social action by studying the change of network and information theoretic properties, which suggests a link to social entropy theory (Bailey, 1990(Bailey, , 2006. This differentiates Transcendental Information Cascades from the system-centric perspectives commonly referred to in Social Computing and Computer-supported Cooperative Work (Grudin, 1994;Parameswaran and Whinston, 2007).…”
