Living labs as instruments for business and social innovation in rural areas

Abstract: This paper presents results of the living labs methodology as applied to rural development. Within the C@R project, seven living labs have been launched in various regions in Europe and South-Africa. A collaborative platform has been developed to support rural communities' collaboration. The architecture of this platform is based on open service oriented architecture and allows for reusing and sharing services and applications. The paper demonstrates the validation and use of this platform, integrating various… Show more

“…Marti et al (2016) reports the importance of interconnected products and services ecosystems, in order to successfully cope with the complexity of social challenges, although specific features of a supporting technological solution are not described. Schaffers et al (2009) proposes a platform based on open service-oriented architecture that allows for reusing and sharing services and applications.…”

“…www.timreview.ca Nikolov & Antonova, 2012;Schaffers et al, 2009;Schuurman et al, 2011;Svensson & Eriksson, 2009). However, after making such general statements, the focus of these studies usually turns entirely back towards the user research part, leaving the business model aspect undefined and providing no practical guidelines whatsoever on how to make the link.…”

“…The largest group of studies focuses on multi-actor living lab consortia and considers the collaboration model between these partners as a key issue in securing a sustainable and long-term collaboration agreement (Garcia-Guzman et al, 2013; Grezes et al, 2013;Mulvena et al, 2010;Niitamo et al, 2006;Nikolov & Antonova, 2012;Pitse-Boshomane et al, 2008;Schaffers et al, 2009). In these studies, the lack of a good business model is considered to be a major possible roadblock to open innovation within living labs.…”

“…Businesses seem to get involved in LLs to have access to an intermediary, the LL itself, which allows them to open their innovation process and to find new applications and new paths for their technologies, inside or outside their organisation (Almirall and Wareham, 2008;Commission, 2009;Schaffers et al, 2009;Schuurman et al, 2013). Among other methods, this is achieved through the development and testing of products and services, with the LL becoming a strategic tool to collect data on users, and even competitors (Almirall and Wareham, 2008;Dutilleul et al, 2010;Leminen, 2013;Nyström et al, 2014).…”

“…The obstacles mentioned in our analysis all have to do with the question of intellectual property and the difficulty of transforming the experimentations taking place in the context of an LL into products and services that have market value (Schaffers et al, 2009). As a result, in both cases, businesses hesitate to join the partnership proposed by LLs and limit their financial investments in the partnership (Kommonen and Botero, 2009;Mulder et al, 2008).…”
