Liver and plasma lipids of spawning burbot

Abstract: Levels of liver and plasma lipids of the burbot Lota lota were highest before reproduction and decreased during and after spawning. Triacylglycerols accounted for 95% of the liver lipids. High concentrations of leptin-immunoreactive peptide were present in the burbot liver, suggesting that it may be secreted by this organ.

“…The connection observed between the plasma leptin-immunoreactivity and thyroid hormone levels in the burbots has, however, been previously observed in vitro also in mice (Yoshida et al, 1997). Leptin-immunoreactive peptide could also be measured in burbot liver supporting the previous results of Mustonen et al (2002b) with similar average leptin-immunoreactivity concentrations (8-11 ng g -1 liver) to the values of this study. Previously leptin protein expression has been observed in the chicken (Gallus domesticus) liver, presumably due to its crucial role in avian lipogenesis (Taouis et al, 1998).…”

“…The liver lipid classes were analyzed with thin layer chromatography (TLC-FID, Iatroscan new Mark V, Iatron Laboratories Inc., Tokyo, Japan [22]), and the tissue FA composition using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-FID and GC-MS, 6890N network GC-system, Agilent Technologies Inc., Palo Alto, CA, USA). For a more detailed description of FA analyses, see Nieminen et al [14,23].…”

“…Le glucagon augmente la concentration sanguine en glucose par la glycogénolyse au niveau hépatique. Comme c'est le cas chez de nombreuses espèces 22 , le foie du Merlu constitue un organe de stockage des lipides. En revanche, il semble que chez beaucoup de poissons, l'insuline soit plus impliquée dans le métabolisme protéique 7 .…”
