We describe a flexible and modular delayed-feedback nonlinear oscillator that is capable of generating a wide range of dynamical behaviours, from periodic oscillations to high-dimensional chaos. The oscillator uses electro-optic modulation and fibre-optic transmission, with feedback and filtering implemented through real-time digital signal processing. We consider two such oscillators that are coupled to one another, and we identify the conditions under which they will synchronize. By examining the rates of divergence or convergence between two coupled oscillators, we quantify the maximum Lyapunov exponents or transverse Lyapunov exponents of the system, and we present an experimental method to determine these rates that does not require a mathematical model of the system. Finally, we demonstrate a new adaptive control method that keeps two oscillators synchronized, even when the coupling between them is changing unpredictably.

Abstract-The current status of lithium-niobate external-modulator technology is reviewed with emphasis on design, fabrication, system requirements, performance, and reliability. The technology meets the performance and reliability requirements of current 2.5-, 10-, and 40-Gb/s digital communication systems, as well as CATV analog systems. The current trend in device topology is toward higher data rates and increased levels of integration. In particular, multiple high-speed modulation functions, such as 10-Gb/s return-to-zero pulse generation plus data modulation, have been achieved in a single device.

Thirdly, high spectral efficiency (SE) can be achieved in a WDM system that has a common channel grid through the use of high bit rate channels. Improving spectral utilization facilitates increased overall system capacity and lower overall cost.In this paper, we review the advances in selected optical technologies and techniques for high bit rate fiber transmission. We describe optical terminal technologies and techniques for high bit rate transmission, including optical modulation formats and their corresponding transmitter and receiver designs. A comparison among different modulation formats, having amplitude and/or phase modulation, will be given. Also discussed are optical and electronic equalization techniques at the optical terminals, and forward error correction (FEC). We next review advances in optical repeaters, including optical amplifiers and dispersion compensators. Broadband Raman amplification and nonlinearity management will also be discussed. We follow by examining link design issues such as the
