Liquid phase hydrogenation of furfural using 2-propanol over $$\hbox {ZrO}_{2}$$ ZrO 2

Abstract: Hydrogenation of furfural is carried out efficiently by ZrO 2 using 2-propanol as a hydrogen source in liquid phase. Various characterizations like XRD, Pyridine-FTIR, NH 3-TPD (acidity), CO 2-TPD (basic property), and N 2 physisorption study for surface area analysis were used to understand the properties and to correlate with the activity results. These results revealed that zirconia calcined at low temperature (573 K) possesses amorphous phase, high surface area and large number of acid-base sites which are… Show more

“…Nagaiah et al investigated the transfer hydrogenation of FF to FFA over ZrO 2 catalyst using isopropanol as hydrogen donor. 116 In the mixture of FF and isopropanol with a mole ratio of 1 : 8, the mesoporous Z-573 gave >99% FF conversion and >99% FFA selectivity with a rate constant of 3 × 10 −5 mol L −1 s −1 at 383 K for 6 hours. The good stability was demonstrated for at least four catalytic recycles with no obvious loss of FFA selectivity.…”
